⚖️🇦🇺🇳🇿AUD/NZD Stands Vulnerable For A Correction Lower: Cable FX Macro
From early 2025 through mid-2026, the cross tracked rate differentials very closely. When the NZ-AU yield spread rallied, AUD/NZD climbed; when the spread narrowed or dipped, AUD/NZD followed.
Across September–October 2026, the NZ-AU yield spread plummeted sharply from over +35–40 bps toward +16.8 bps. However, AUD/NZD spot stayed elevated near 1.2333 rather than following yields lower.
The FX spot market is currently over-priced relative to its underlying fixed-income anchor. Either yield spreads must re-widen to justify AUD/NZD at ~1.2333, or AUD/NZD faces a downside mean-reversion risk toward the yield spread.
A downside surprise in upcoming Q3 CPI readings showing broader inflation moderation would strip away remaining rate-hike premium. Australian yields would fall, closing the yield gap from the Australian side and pulling AUD/NZD spot down. Also, any dovish tone from the RBA could reprice spreads and leave the spot rate vulnerable for a move lower. The upcoming RBNZ rate decision stands on the NZD side of the equation as a potential risk.
